Globe Telecom says it has 'sufficient backup power' to address electricity outages

Globe Telecom said on Monday, June 7, that all of its cell towers are ready if Luzon’s rotational blackouts affect its sites.

In a statement, Globe said all of its key installations, particularly cell towers, are equipped with lithium batteries that can last for two hours.

“We have sufficient backup power to address the two-hour rotating power interruptions we are now experiencing,” said Peter Tan, Globe senior vice president for network operations.

“We also have on standby a number of portable, trailer-mounted generator sets that we can deploy anywhere they may be needed,” added Tan.

Globe advised its customers to charge their phones, laptops, and other gadgets in case of blackouts, and if possible, have a generator on standby.

For modems, Globe said customers can use an uninterruptible power supply, also known as UPS, for emergency power.

From May 31 to June 2, several areas in Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon experienced rotational blackouts as power plants went offline. The Department of Energy said consumers may experience blackouts until Thursday, June 10, due to thin reserves.

Power supply is seen to stabilize in the third week of June, as the country has already entered the rainy season.

So far, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines has announced scheduled interruptions in parts of Tarlac and Benguet for Friday, June 11. – Rappler.com
