MANILA, Philippines – The government has confiscated P25 million-worth of counterfeit drugs, mostly illegally imported medicines that are expired or about to expire, on Wednesday, May 22.

The seized illegally imported medicines had brands like Simvastatin, Centrum Multivitamins, Perigo (Ibuprofen), and Amoxycillin, among others.

In a statement, the Department of Finance said the operatives of the Bureau of Customs Intellectual Property Rights Division became suspicious of one 40-footer container van that arrived at the Manila International Container Port (MICP), supposedly containing the medicines. The van did not have temperature control.

The shipment was composed of 20 pallets of fake or expired medicines of various brands that were consigned to Mountain Glory Agri Sales Corporation, which upon verification, had no license to operate and to import medicines in violation of R.A. 8293 or the Intellectual Property Rights Law.

The consignee also was not accredited with the Foods and Drugs Administration (FDA).

This batch of confiscated medicines is one of the biggest so far. The Trade Department’s Intellectual Property Office has monitored several medicines illegally entering the Philippines, along with branded bags and other goods.
