Smart Communications to spend P1B on Wi-Fi boost
Smart says its Wi-Fi public hotspots are undergoing upgrades in all 4 terminals of NAIA, and the airports in Davao, Iloilo, Negros Occidental, and Negros Oriental

MANILA, Philippines – PLDT Incorporated subsidiary Smart Communications is spending P1 billion to expand the footprint of its Wi-Fi service in transport centers, government offices, and business establishments across the country.

The P1 billion earmarked for the rollout forms part of PLDT’s capital spending budget of P43 billion for 2016.

Smart said its Wi-Fi public hotspots in all 4 terminals of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), Francisco Bangoy International Airport in Davao, Iloilo International Airport, Bacolod-Silay International Airport in Negros Occidental, and Dumaguete-Sibulan Airport in Negros Oriental are “undergoing upgrades.”

The wireless subsidiary of PLDT has also put up Wi-Fi hotspots at the terminals of major bus companies, including Alps, Five Star Bus, Isarog Bus, Jam Liner, Philtranco, and Victory Liner.

Smart Wi-Fi also covers public areas, such as city halls, schools, and establishments.

“Over the past months, we have aggressively broadened the Smart Wi-Fi footprint through our key partnerships with government institutions and business establishments, consequently improving internet access and coverage nationwide,” Eric Alberto, executive vice president at PLDT and Smart, said in a statement.

“The Smart Wi-Fi rollout complements our long-standing efforts to give Filipinos a seamless digital experience, while providing businesses and institutions solutions that suit their needs, and a platform to reach out to a wider audience,” Alberto added.

The expansion of Smart Wi-Fi is supported by PLDT’s fixed and wireless networks, backed by fiber optic footprint spanning over 100,000 kilometers. – Rappler.com
