MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) has moved the deadline for the submission of prequalification documents for the P17.5 billion Mactan-Cebu International Airport expansion project for the 4th time.

In a notice issued on Monday, April 1, DOTC undersecretary Rene Limcaoco told bidders that the deadline has been pushed back to April 22 instead of April 5. He added that the new schedule is final and that his agency would not give any more extensions.

“Please be notified that, upon the request of several bidders, the submission and opening of documents is moved to April 22. There will be no further extension,” Limcaoco said.

The agency first moved the deadline from February 18 to 27. It then moved the deadline a second time to March 22 before rescheduling for April 5. The DOTC earlier said that it pushed back the deadlines to give bidders more time to conduct ocular inspections.

Currently, the airport’s terminal has a capacity of 4.5 million passengers per year, which was breached in 2010.

The Mactan-Cebu airport expansion project covers the upkeep of old and new facilities and the construction of a passenger terminal that has a capacity of 8 million passengers per year.

The project has attracted interest from the biggest business groups in the country, including:

Foreign firm such as Samsung C&T Corp., Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), SG&V Co., Aeroport de Lyon, Macquarie Infrastructure and Real Assets (Singapore) Pte Ltd, and Changi Airports International have also inquired about the project.

The Mactan-Cebu International Airport Terminal is located in a 797-hectare property. It has a single 3,300-meter runway and a full-length taxiway.

It is the country’s second busiest gateway, next to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila. – Rappler.com
