Redundancies resulted from the migration of Digitel's landline subscribers in Luzon to PLDT

MANILA, Philippines – About 80% of the affected 427 Digital Telecommunications Philippines Inc. (Digitel) employees accepted the redundancy package offered following moves to integrate some operations with parent firm Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT).

In a statement on Monday, April 15, Digitel spokesperson Reuben Pangan said the enhanced separation packages included a 2-year medical coverage plan.

“To cushion the impact of the redundancy program, we found alternative employment for about two-thirds of the affected employees, either in PLDT, Sun Cellular, or with our contractors,” Pangan said.

After acquiring Digitel, the operator of Sun Cellular, from the Gokongwei family in 2011, PLDT absorbed Digitel’s 140,000 landline subscribers in northern, central and southern Luzon, resulting in redundancies.

Pangan said Digitel’s had modernized only 5% of its landline network in 2011, and the others are nearing its end-of-life stage.

To address imminent deteriorating service quality due to equipment failure, Digitel and PLDt decided that “migration to PLDT was the most expeditious and effective way of ensuring that Digitel customers would continue to be served at the same rates, with the same subscriber number, and, with the same if not better quality of service,” Pangan noted. – Rappler.com
