MANILA, Philippines – Bridging the power gap between now and 2015 is the main challenge for policy makers dealing with the power deficiency in the Mindanao region.

“We have projected that Mindanao will have additional power by 2015 as indicated by committed projects in the region,” Energy Secretary Carlos Jericho Petilla said in a statement released on Friday, March 22.

“The challenge now is how to address the power situation from now until 2015,” he stressed.

Plans to address the rolling blackouts in Mindanao are being firmed up by the Department of Energy, the Mindanao Development Authority, and other stakeholders, Petilla said.

These measures will be presented to President Benigno Aquino III and then to the public, he added.

For decades, a hydro power plant complex supplied cheap power to Mindanao residents. Investors have flocked to Luzon and Visayas regions to build power plants or take over existing ones that were made more efficient, but not in Mindanao where the state-owned National Power Corp (Napocor) dominated by operating the hydro plants in Iligan.

Blackouts occurred as demand rose and the Lanao Lake where water for the hydro plant is sourced dip especially during the summer. – Rappler.com
