MANILA, Philippines – Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) customers will see higher electricity bills in September due to an increase in generation and other charges.
Meralco announced Monday, September 9 there will be an overall increase of 18 centavos per kilowatt hour (kWh) in power rates for the month of September after the generation charge went up by 13 centavos to P5.17 per kWh.
Transmission and other charges also increased by 8 centavos and 1 centavo, respectively.
Meralco said the cost of electricity sourced from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market rose P8.70 per kWh on higher trading and other adjustments.
Power from independent power producers and new suppliers however fell 3 centavos per kWh. This was mainly due to the improvement in capacity of some plants and reduction in coal price, which offset the impact of the peso’s depreciation against the dollar.
Meralco reiterated it does not earn from the generation charge and other pass-through charges. Payments for these go directly to its suppliers. – Rappler.com
