This is after the grid corporation restored 8 more transmission lines in the region

NO POWER. Super Typhoon Yolanda's wrath damaged various transmission lines, putting most of the provinces in the region in darkness.

MANILA, Philippines – Eight more 69-kilovolt (kV) transmission lines in Typhoon Yolanda-hit (Haiyan) provinces of Eastern Samar, Leyte and Capiz were restored by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP). This means 83% of the power load in Visayas has been restored.

According to the NGCP, last December 1, the grid corporation energized three 69-kV lines including the Paranas-Taft line segment, which services the Eastern Samar Electric Cooperative (ESAMELCO). The said cooperative distributes power to the whole Eastern Samar province, where the super typhoon first made landfall.

On December 2, two more 69-kV lines were completed, including one that serves Leyte Electric Cooperative II ( LEYECO II), which supplies electricity to hard-hit areas Tacloban City, Palo and Babatngon. On December 5, all transmission lines serving LEYECO II were energized, NGCP claimed.

Meanwhile, the grid corporation’s Panit-an-President Roxas 69-kV line in Panay became operational on December 4. This transmission line serves the Capiz Electric Cooperative (CAPELCO). On December 5, CAPELCO’s Dao substation, which serves the municipalities of Dao, Tapaz, Sigma, Cuartero, Dumalag and Dumarao, was also energized.

Ahead of schedule

In an interview with media in Palo, Leyte on November 18, Energy Secretary Carlos Jericho Petilla said he would resign if power isn’t restored in Yolanda-ravaged areas by Christmas eve.

NGCP said that with 83% of the whole Visayas load restored, the agency is ahead of its December 24 commitment.

“The early energization of entire Visayas is our top priority. Our men and women are working non-stop to make this happen,” NGCP spokesperson Atty Cynthia Perez-Alabanza said.

Alabanza added that the damage caused by Yolanda was “unprecedented.”

“But this only makes us work harder to bring electricity to all those affected,” she stressed.

According to NGCP, the super typhoon damaged more than 2,000 structures along 34 transmission lines. It also affected 22 substations in Visayas. When it hit, it plunged the islands of Panay and Negros and 4 Visayas provinces into total darkness– Rappler.com
