MANILA, Philippines – Energy Secretary Carlos Jericho Petilla expects a speedy solution to some minor problems with two new wells at the Malampaya natural gas facility in Palawan, assuring the public that the issue wouldn’t impact power rates.

Petilla said the two wells installed as part of the second phase of the Malampaya project are clogged. He said though that the clogging would be resolved on Wednesday, January 8. “Output is restricted to 70% only because of two new wells installed. They did not expect the heavy debris but it’s expected to be back to normal by Wednesday,” said Petilla.

The energy chief also assured the public of an adequate power supply in Luzon and Visayas for 2014, with power in over 300 municipalities in the the Visayas restored.

Petilla also does not expect power supply to tighten in the second quarter of the year, noting that “there will be no problems especially in the Visayas.” Petilla added that this was “based on the current situation now.”

A limited supply of power is affecting Mindanao, however, causing power outages in the region. Petila added that new coal-bsaed power plants would be operational next year to help remedy this. – Rappler.com
