Meralco, NGCP ready for Typhoon Chedeng
The power providers say their teams and equipment are on standby to immediately fix transmission lines and utilities that the typhoon might damage

MANILA, Philippines – Manila Electric Company (Meralco) and the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) both announced on April 1, Wednesday, that they were well prepared to respond to the challenges that Typhoon Chedeng posed.

“Our crews are on standby to attend to any trouble that may affect our facilities in areas that might be hit by the typhoon,” said Alfredo Panlilio, Meralco’s senior vice president and head for customer retail services and corporate communications.

Panlilio said Meralco had put in place necessary measures to mitigate the possible impact of the typhoon.

“Meralco, for instance, has consistently requested billboard owners and operators to temporarily roll their billboards up to prevent these structures from being toppled by the strong winds,” he said.

Billboards that fall into electrical facilities are among the main reasons for power outages whenever there are strong typhoons.

The company has also issued advisories on the appropriate precautionary measures to take before a typhoon.

NGCP, for its part, has started preparations to minimize the impact of Typhoon Chedeng on power transmission.

The power grid operator will activate its North and South Luzon Regional Command Centers and District Command Centers on Thursday, April 2.

NGCP’s Overall Disaster Command Center monitors all power restoration activities, reports, and updates from the regional command centers in Northern Luzon, Southern Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao, whichever is directly affected.

Other preparations include ensuring the reliability of communications equipment, availability of hardware materials, standby generators, vehicles, spares, and supplies necessary for the repair of damaged facilities, as well as the positioning of line crews and helicopters in strategic areas to facilitate immediate restoration work.

These measures are part of its Integrated Disaster Action Plan (IDAP) designed to ensure the readiness of all power transmission facilities expected to be affected by the passage of typhoons.

Latest reports expect Typhoon Chedeng to make landfall over the eastern coast of Aurora or Isabela by late Saturday evening, April 4, to early Sunday morning, April 5.
