Sobrepeña-led CJHDevCo to vacate Camp John Hay
MANILA, Philippines – The Robert John Sobrepeña-led Camp John Hay Development Corporation (CJHDevCo) will vacate Camp John Hay and turn over all its buildings and facilities in good condition to the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA).
An arbitration committee ordered CJHDevco to vacate Camp John Hay in Baguio City and return the property to BCDA. BCDA is the government agency mandated to develop Camp John Hay, a former US facility.
On March 6, CJHDevCo filed a judicial confirmation before the Baguio Regional Trial Court (RTC) to pave the way for the implementation of CJHDevCo’s exit from Camp John Hay.
With the filing, Baguio RTC will issue a writ of execution to enforce the exit and turnover of the property.
BCDA President and CEO Arnel Paciano D. Casanova welcomed the move but again cautioned buyers, locators, and sub-lessees in Camp John Hay against being misled by the Sobrepeña-led CJHDevCo, which is trying to avoid liability.
He advised them to seek legal counsel to ensure that their rights and interests will be protected.
“The last thing we want to happen is for their contracts to be a worthless piece of paper like what happened with the College Assurance Plan (CAP),” Casanova said.
CAP was the pre-need firm headed by Sobrepeña, which went bankrupt and sought court-supervised rehabilitation.
Sobrepeña, chairman of the Camp John Hay Development Corporation (CJHDevCo), is also affiliated with Fil-Estate Corporation, and the Metro Rail Transit Development Corporation (MRTDevco).
Casanova stressed all buyers, sub-locators, hotel unit owners and sub-lessees should not believe they are not affected by the recent decision of the Philippine Dispute Resolution Center Incorporated.
Apart from vacating Camp John Hay, PDRCI ordered CJHDevCo to return P1.42-billion ($62.89-million), which the CJHDevCo paid to the BCDA as lease payments.
Thus, Casanova said that the only way for the CJHDevCo’s victims to recover their investments and protect their interests is to lay claim to the P1.42-billion.
“Simply put, CJHDevCo will be refunded the entire amount it paid to the BCDA but there seems to be no action on the side of CJHDevCo to refund the buyers and sub-lessees,” Casanova said. – Rappler.com
