LRT, MRT on limited operations Dec 24 and 31
These mass transit lines are on shortened operations during the eve of Christmas and New Year, while MMDA suspends the number coding scheme for 13 days

MANILA, Philippines – Light Rail Transit lines 1 and 2 (LRT1 and LRT2) and Metro Rail Transit line 3 (MRT3) will run on shortened operations this Christmas and New Year’s Eve, Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) spokesperson Hernando Cabrera announced.

Regular operations of MRT3 start from 4:30 am to 11 pm on weekdays and 5:30 am to 11 pm during weekends.

But MRT3 along EDSA that serves close to 540,000 passengers a day will dispatch the last train from North Avenue station at 8:30 pm and from Taft Avenue station at 9:14 pm on Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

On the other hand, the last train of LRT1 from the Baclaran and Roosevelt stations leaves at 8 pm on December 24 and at 7 pm on December 31.

LRT1 is the oldest mass transit system in Southeast Asia that runs from Baclaran in Parañaque City to Roosevelt Avenue in Quezon City.

Likewise, Cabrera announced the shortened operations for LRT2.

The last train from the Santolan station will leave at 8 pm and from Recto station at 8:30 pm on December 24 and from Santolan at 7 pm and Recto station at 7:30 pm on December 31.

No number coding

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) lifted the number coding scheme starting December 23 until January 4, 2015.

In an interview over DZMM, MMDA chairman Francis Tolentino said they also decided to include December 29 – a working day, in the 13-day long number coding-free schedule.

The feared December 19 carmageddon was eased as most motorists experienced fast-moving traffic on major thoroughfares. Tolentino also credited the truck ban imposed from 5 pm to 12 midnight for the breezy Friday traffic, as well as the motorists heeding MMDA’s warnings about dates that traffic would be at their heaviest.

Still, MMDA warned again that December 23 – the last working day before Christmas – could be a carmageddon date as this also coincides with the Metro Manila Film Festival parade.

Makati, which has its own trafic scheme, also lifted the number coding on select dates:
