DPWH may extend Ayala Bridge closure
The possible delay stems from unforeseen underground utility cables that needed to be cleared

MANILA, Philippines –The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) may extend the closure of the Ayala Bridge in Manila until May, a DPWH official said.

DPWH officials will discuss the possible extension with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and Manila city government.

The bridge, which connects Ermita and San Miguel districts in Manila, was closed on March 21 to make way for rehabilitation works to restore its structural integrity, and was scheduled to be partially reopened on April 21.

The possible extension is due to “unforeseen underground utility cables,” leaving the DPWH with little alternative but to keep the bridge closed to all traffic for the time being.

“The problem is not under [water]. It is in the approaches. Once it is done, we can continue,” said DPWH director for National Capital Region (NCR) Reynaldo Tagudando.

He explained that that a utility firm’s cables were found in the bridge’s approaches while contractors Frey-Fil Corporation and EEI Corporation were digging in the site.

“We had to stop, so the wires could be relocated,” he said.

Tagudando added that there are other safety concerns they need to think about.

One of these is the lifting of the bridge by 70 centimeters so barges passing through the Pasig River would not hit it.

There is no date yet for the partial re-opening of the bridge as Tagudando said they still needed to verify that with the contractors. – Rappler.com
