LRT2 East extension project groundbreaking set on June 9
MANILA, Philippines – The construction for the Light Rail Transit line 2 (LRT2) East extension project will kick off with a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, June 9, at the line’s Santolan station.
The groundbreaking ceremony will be hosted by the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC), led by Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya and the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA), with administrator Honrito Chaneco. Representatives from DM Consunji Inc, the contractor for the project, will also be present.
The P 2.27-billion project ($48.73 million), will add 4.2 kilometers (km) to the line up to Masinag, Antipolo City. It is eyed to be operational by the third quarter of 2017 and is expected to cater to an additional 75,000 daily passengers living in densely populated areas of Rizal.
The Masinag extension also covers the construction of a 4-kilometer elevated viaduct from Santolan, Pasig City to Masinag, Antipolo City. Two additional stations will be built: the Emerald Station in Cainta, Rizal, and the Masinag Station at the Masinag Junction, Antipolo City.
Apart from the construction of the eastward extension to Masinag, two other major contracts are up for bidding to improve and modernize the LRT2 system’s services.
An operations and maintenance contract is already in the procurement process, while the LRT2 West extension project is already in the pipeline following the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) Board’s approval in May.
The locally-financed project under DOTC involves the design and construction for the extension of the existing LRT2, which will run from Recto Station, extending westward to Pier 4 area, including the turn-back track.
The project, approximately 3.02 km-long, also has 3 proposed additional stations: Tutuban (next to the Cluster Mall); Divisoria (west of the Recto Avenue and Asuncion Street intersection); and Pier 4 (located 50 meters north of Zaragoza Street).
The LRT2 West extension project is eyed to be implemented within 3.5 years. – Rappler.com
