Construction of new Makati underpass starts
DPWH asks motorists and commuters for understanding as it begins work on a P1.27 billion Gil Puyat-Makati Avenue-Paseo de Roxas underpass in Makati

MANILA, Philippines – Motorists going to Senator Gil Puyat Avenue in Makati City from Epifanio de los Santos (EDSA) Boulevard be warned: traffic is about to get worse.

On Saturday, June 13, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced that it would begin work on the P1.27 billion Gil Puyat-Makati Avenue-Paseo de Roxas vehicle underpass project.

Once completed, the 4-lane, 880 meter-long underpass will allow vehicles taking Sen. Gil Puyat Ave (formerly Buendia) to cross Makati Avenue and Paseo de Roxas without interruption. A tunnel spanning 570 meters will let cars bypass the two busy intersections.

Public Works Secretary Rogelio Singson said the work teams are “probably preparing” the necessary equipment, with work expected to start this week.

Singson appealed to motorists and commuters for understanding while construction takes place. He added that the agency is considering allowing vehicles to pass through Jupiter Street to get to EDSA.

The underpass will have two pumping stations with 3 submersible pumps on top of a tunnel drain box and reinforced concrete pipe culvert.

DPWH expects to complete the project by January 2017.
