BSP to release P100 bill with stronger violet color on Feb 1
The new bill will make it easier to distinguish from the P1,000 banknote in response to suggestions from the public

MANILA, Philippines – The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) announced it will start circulating P100 bills with stronger mauve or violet color starting Monday, February 1, 2016.

“The new bills are being released in order to make P100 bills more distinct from the P1,000 bill. This is in response to suggestions from the public to make it easier to distinguish from the P1,000 bill,” the BSP said in a statement released on January 29. (READ: Confused over P100 and P1000 bills?)

The issue surfaced last year with a number of citizens complaining they were confused by the similarities in color between the P100 and P1,000 bills of the New Generation Currency (NGC).

The number of complaints prompted Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III to ask for an explanation from the BSP.

Stronger violets

Compared with the current color of the P100 bill in circulation, the new P100 bill will have a stronger mauve or violet color on the obverse and reverse sides. All the other features of the said banknote will remain the same, the BSP said.

The central bank pointed out that the current P100 bill can still be used for daily transactions for payment of goods and services, no different from the new P100 bill with stronger mauve or violet color  – until supplies of the first version last.

The BSP also said that only the old banknote series dubbed the New Design Series (NDS), launched in 1985, will no longer be acceptable in daily transactions for payment of goods and services. These can only be exchanged for New Generation Currency (NGC) banknotes with authorized agent banks and the BSP until December 31, 2016. – Rappler.com
