NEW YORK, United States (UPDATED) – Twitter hit Wall Street with a bang on Thursday, November 7 as an investor frenzy quickly sent shares surging after the public share offering for the fast-growing social network.

In the first exchanges, Twitter vaulted 80.7% to $47, a day after the initial public offering (IPO) at $26 per share.

While some analysts cautioned about the fast-changing nature of social media, the debut led to a stampede for Twitter shares.

“Twitter needs to step up and deliver on the expectations that are fueling its valuation, and show that it has what it takes to provide a sustainable business model.”

Zoller said it was key “to keep users engaged while driving advertising revenues,” and that “Twitter will need to innovate in both services and advertising.”

In a speech Wednesday in New York, Mary Jo White, the head of the US Securities and Exchange Commission, expressed concern over the perhaps overzealous interest of investors – lured by huge numbers of users of social media – in tech stocks with uncertain profitability.
