Uber brings carpooling service UberHOP to Manila
Uber Technologies tests out a carpooling service with specific pick-up and drop-off locations

MANILA, Philippines – San Francisco-based Uber Technologies, Incorporated launched its new carpooling service in Manila on Wednesday, February 10.

The service, called UberHOP, costs P75 ($1.59) in Manila – much lower than Seattle’s $5. Riders will meet an Uber driver at a specific pick-up spot and will be driven to a common drop-off location.

UberHOP’s trial routes are in Makati City and Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.

The routes will run from 7 am to 10 am and will be reversed for the evening commute, between 4 pm and 9 pm. (READ: APEC 2015: Uber positions itself as solution to congested roads)

Manila becomes the third city in the world, after Toronto and Seattle, to see the introduction of UberHOP.

“Since our launch in the Philippines, we’ve been working hard to tackle one of the biggest challenges cities like Manila face: congestion,” Uber Philippines General Manager Laurence Cua said in a statement.

“By making it convenient and affordable for people to share rides, we can get more people into fewer cars,” Cua added.

The ride-hailing app company also said that the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) are supporting “technologies that help realize a smarter urban mobility future for the Philippines.”

“We’re thrilled to be able to support the DOTC in their efforts to tackle the transportation challenges of Metro Manila using our technology platform,” Cua added.

“With UberHOP we are providing even more viable alternatives to car ownership that can improve quality for life for everyone.”

The launch came a few weeks after a pilot of the new service, which provided insight into consumer habits and usage trends, as well as rider and driver partner feedback. – Rappler.com
