MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines is a fast-growing market with social media and technologically-savvy people who will appreciate the wide range of products, whether for work or entertainment, that Samsung has to offer.
That is how Harry Lee, Samsung Electronics Philippines Corporation’s (SEPCO) newly-appointed president and managing director, vowed to solidify the company’s position in the Philippine market.
“I’m eager to find more ways for Samsung to grow with the Philippine market and better serve their needs,” said Lee.
Lee will leverage his experience in operational excellence and business management to continue to build SEPCO’s success in the Philippines. Prior to his new post, Lee was president of Samsung Asia Property Limited and was responsible for Samsung Electronics’ businesses in Singapore.
In January, Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest smartphone maker, posted its first drop in annual net profit in 3 years.
The tech giant said it recorded a net profit of 23.4 trillion won ($21.34 billion) in 2014, down 23.2% from a year ago and the first decline since 2011.
The South Korean firm, whose key mobile phone operations have struggled in the face of intense competition from cut-price Chinese rivals, also warned that it expected 2015’s “business environment…to be as challenging as 2014.”
It’s rival, Apple, posted a record quarterly profit of $18 billion on the back of booming iPhone sales, especially in China.
Samsung’s new ‘edge’
Despite a tempered growth outlook, the world’s largest smartphone maker will launch the Galaxy Note Edge on February 21.
Samsung’s Galaxy Noted Edge promises to provide users with a new way to access information and engage with their mobile device via its unique curved Edge screen.
It has quick access to frequently used apps, alerts, and device functionality all with the swipe of a thumb, even if the cover is closed.
Galaxy Note Edge will retail at P43,990 ($992.06). Initial reports said only 1,000 of this will be rolled out in Philippine stores.
Samsung’s S6, meanwhile, will have a global launch on March 1. – Rappler.com
