MANILA, Philippines – Lopez-led Energy Development Corp. (EDC) has started constructing its 87-megawatt (MW) Burgos wind project (BWP) in Ilocos Norte that is expected to come on stream by 2014.
In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange on Monday, June 24, EDC said it issued Danish firm Vestas, its contractor, a “notice to proceed” with the construction of the wind facility on a 600-hectare property covering 3 barangays – Saoit, Poblacion and Nagsurot – in Burgos town.
“The BWP is a major pillar of our P32 billion investment plan this year. We are proceeding as planned given our fully funded business plan and the proven Vestas technology,” EDC president and COO Richard Tantoco said.

Vestas will install a total of 29 units of its V90-3.0 MW turbines for the initial phase of the wind project worth $300 million.
EDC said it intends to expand the project to 150 MW in the future.
“Now that we have honed our skills to develop a viable wind project, we intend to add an additional 21 units of 3 MW wind turbine generators to bring BWP’s capacity up to 150 MW,” Tantoco said.
The wind project is expected to generate around 233 gigawatt per hour (gWh) of electricity every year, enough to power more than a million households in Luzon, according to the disclosure.
