MANILA, Philippines – The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) wants to expand the capacity of its Las Piñas substation to meet increasing power demand in Metro Manila.

NGCP, which operates the country’s transmission highway, asked the Energy Regulatory Commission to approve its plan to install another transformer in the substation.

If approved, NGCP will spend around P662.7 million for the expansion, which will be completed in 33 months.

The Las Piñas substation, one of the 6 that supply the power requirements of the Manila Electric Co. franchise in Metro Manila, has an installed capacity of three 300-megavolt ampere (MVA) transformers and NGCP intends to add another 300 MVA capacity.

NGCP said the additional capacity will prevent power outages in the metro in case any of the transformers fails.

In the case of the Las Piñas substation, overloading will ensue if any of its 3 transformers malfunctions.

“If the Las Piñas substation suffers overloading, we will then have to resort to load shedding. By carrying out this project, we can avoid this scenario since the substation will be more capable of handling larger load,” said Rico Vega, NGCP deputy assistant chief technical officer for planning and engineering. – Rappler.com
