LTO nabs 10 colorum bus operators
The LTO says the initial apprehension of violators shows the intent of the government to stop the rampant violation of transportation rules

MANILA, Philippines – The first day of the government’s intensified crackdown against colorum vehicle operators yielded 10 erring bus operators who have been slapped a hefty fine of P1 million ($22,000) each, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) said on Friday, June 20.

The LTO said the 10 buses caught by traffic enforcers include two from Bachelor Express plying the Butuan City to Cagayan route, Buenasher Transport Corp in Manila, Lucena Lines in Laguna, Jerel Transport, two Super 5 buses from Davao, AOM bus from Naga City to Legazpi City, Dalian Liner and NELBUSCO.

“These colorum buses have been impounded in accordance with JAO 2014-01, and the fines will go straight to the National Treasury, once paid. Let this be a warning to colorum operators.  The LTO will enforce traffic rules for the sole purpose of ensuring safety in land transportation,” said Assistant Secretary Alfonso Tan Jr.

Authorities began the strict implementation of DOTC-LTFRB Joint Administrative Order No. 2014-01 (JAO 2014-01) on Thursday, June 19, to clean the streets of colorum vehicles.

Under the order, first-time “colorum offenders” face the following fines: motorcycles, P6,000; jeepneys, P50,000; sedans, P120,000; vans, P200,000; trucks, P200,000; and buses, up to P1 million.

Tan said the initial apprehension of the 10 bus operators showed the intent of transportation authorities to implement its rules and regulations.

“The LTO is serious in putting a stop to rampant violations of land transportation rules and regulations.  As part of our reform program, one of our priorities is to instill orderliness on our roads, for both public utility and private vehicles,” he said.

The Stop and Go Coalition, an umbrella organization of transport operators, led a protest caravan on Thursday to dramatize their opposition to  JAO 2014-01. – Rappler.com
