DOE warns of weekend rotating brownouts in Luzon
The one-hour rotating brownouts on July 12 is due to the two-day maintenance shutdown of the Ilijan power plant in Batangas

MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Energy (DOE) warns Luzon residents of hour-long rotating brownouts on Saturday, July 12, as a major power plant is due for a two-day maintenance shutdown.

The 1,200-megawatt Ilijan natural gas plant in Batangas will shut down this weekend, July 12 and 13.

The Ilijan natural gas plant, operated by Kepco Philippines Incorporate, is one of the 3 natural gas plants supplying 30% to 40% of Luzon’s energy requirements.

Calaca, a 600-MW coal-fired power plant in Batangas, is also on forced shutdown.

“If Calaca does not come in by 10 am, Saturday, we will have an hour of rotating brownouts from 10 am to 2 pm. However, this is not because of Calaca. This is because of Ilijan PIGing  [Pipeline Inspection Gauge] that will last for 2 days,” Energy Secretary Carlos Jericho Petilla said, Friday, July 11.

The PIGing will clean the nearly 15-kilometer pipeline of Ilijan originating from the Malampaya platform.

The PIGing also intends to eliminate accumulated deposits that affects the overall productivity of the facility.

The forced shutdown of the power plants is necessary as postponing “might just aggravate our current energy situation,” Petilla explained.

“We have the equipment ready, so might as well do it as scheduled….We can’t risk resetting the pigging as there are other power plants that are scheduled for maintenance,” the energy chief added. Rappler.com
