CAGAYAN, Philippines – The Cagayan North International Airport is set to open domestic flights to several provinces other than flights en route to Manila later this year, a spokesperson of the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA) said Monday, May 4.

CEZA spokesperson Charlotte Collado told Rappler that they are waiting for concessionaire aircraft and are in the process of talking to Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines (PAL), PAL Express, and other airlines.

“We’re waiting for the confirmation of these aircraft carriers,” Collado said.

The airport’s domestic flights are expected to lessen the burden of air passengers travelling to provinces such as Cebu, Davao, and other key cities in the central and southern parts of the Philippines.

“Instead of taking connecting flights, for example, going to Cebu or to any part of the South (Philippines), they will only have to take a direct flight from here to there,” Collado said.

In Tuguegarao Airport, flights are bound only to Manila and vice versa.

Direct flights to some Asian countries are also being arranged, but no confirmed date yet.

The project was a joint venture of CEZA and a private consortium. It was started in 2009 and tested by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) in 2013.

“As to the facilities and requirements set by the aviation authorities, we’re complete and approved,” Collado said. – Rappler.com
