MANILA, Philippines (3rd UPDATE) – The restoration of telecommunications services continues in areas hit by Typhoon Ompong (Mangkhut).
In a statement on Sunday, September 16, PLDT and Smart said fixed line and mobile services in Northern Luzon and Central Luzon "have been brought back up to about 96%."
They said "round-the-clock" network restoration work is focused on Cagayan, Benguet, Apayao, Mountain Province, and Kalinga.
"About half of the outages are due to the lack of commercial power while the balance are caused by cuts in fiber optic connections and misalignments of microwave links," PLDT and Smart added.
As of Sunday, Smart has set up Libreng Tawag and Charging stations in the following areas:
Cagayan
Isabela
Ilocos Norte
Baguio
Smart is also allowing the use of Wi-Fi beyond the 30-minute limit in the following locations:
Ilocos Region
Cagayan Valley
Cordillera Administrative Region
Central Luzon
Globe GoWiFi, free calls
Globe Telecom said it is providing free unlimited GoWiFi in select major malls in the Philippines to aid in communication between the public and emergency personnel. The service will be available from Friday, September 14, to Sunday, September 16.
