George Coe, original cast member of ‘Saturday Night Live,’ dies
The actor dies at 86 after a long illness

MANILA, Philippines – George Coe, a member of Saturday Night Live‘s (SNL) “Not Ready for Primetime Players,” died at 86 on Saturday, July 18. SNL’s “Not Ready for Primetime Players” is what the original cast of the show is called.

Coe died in Santa Monica, California after a long illness.

Coe, who acted for 50 years on film, television, commercial and stage work, leaves behind a diverse body of work. Aside from SNL, the veteran actor was part of the cast of The Stepford Wives (1975) and the 1979 movie Kramer vs. Kramer.

You might also recognize his voice from voiceovers for Celebrity Deathmatch, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. He was also voice of Woodhouse, the valet in the FX animated series Archer

Coe was nominated for an Academy Award for his 1968 comedy short, The Dove, which is a parody of Ingmar Bergman films that he starred in, produced and directed.

Coe was on the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) National Board of Directors for more than a dozen years, having been vice president for two years. He received the guild’s Ralph Morgan Award in 2009.

The SAG-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) released a statement on their website, with president Ken Howard saying, “(Coe) was a stalwart unionist and a tremendous presence in our union for many years. He served his fellow actors and the labor movement with conviction and pride. Our deepest condolences go out to his family.”

Some of his Archer co-stars have also expressed their condolences on social media.
