MANILA, Philippines – Snow Patrol, the Northern Irish/Scottish band held a concert Thursday night, August 9, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The concert was part of their Falling Empires tour in Southeast Asia.

The band, having arrived Tuesday, August 7, when the monsoon was at its height, experienced the non-stop rain and widespread flooding that hit the National Capital Region (NCR) and large parts of Luzon — an event that many observers likened to the flooding caused by Typhoon Ondoy in 2009.

Yet nature’s fury did not stop over 6,000 fans from trooping to Cubao on a still rainy Thursday night to sing along with the band that made such hits as “Chasing Cars” and “Run.”

They opened the musical fest that ran for one hour and 40 minutes with “Open Hands” from their 2006 album, Eyes Open.

The stark stage set-up consisted only of 7 LCD panels but its whimsical and artsy display, which seemed to move to the band’s rhythm, provided the concert-goers with a visual treat.

“It’s our first time here in Manila. I have never been in a place where I’ve seen such grace, such human spirit, such kindness, such trial, such darkness,” said band frontman Gary Lightbody.

“You are all an inspiration to the world. It’s been an honor and a privilege to play to you tonight.

And I’d like to offer this song with our deepest respect and deepest sympathies to your country… Thank you all. We’ll never forget this!”

Cheers erupted thereafter from the band’s Filipino fans, some of whom may have had to pass through flooded areas and endure the traffic to get to the venue.

An encore of “Life-ning,” the current single from their album Fallen Empires was dedicated to our country.

It was a poignant moment as the band expressed admiration for the nation’s resilience, with a calamity that has claimed at least 60 lives and left hundreds of thousands Filipinos homeless or still in evacuation centers.

AN IMAGE LIGHTBODY TWEETED, saying: 'Great gig tonight in Manila. Amazing crowd. Thank you all so much for your spirit, grace and kindness. xx'

The show ended with “Just Say Yes,” a song almost everyone in the concert knew by heart, allowing them to escape the reality of the Habagat and bringing them into a Snow-filled wonderland. – Rappler.com
