Gary Valenciano reacts to criticism against son Gab
'Isang mensahe ko sa sino mang mananalo sa susunod na eleksyon, isipin nyo ang pamilyang Pilipino,' Gary says

MANILA, Philippines – Musician Gary Valenciano came to the defense of his son Gab, who was criticized online for expressing his views on presidential aspirant, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.

In an interview with reporters after the finals night of Your Face Sounds Familiar season 2 on Sunday, December 13, Gary said he understood where his son and also where critics are coming from.

A lot of people have been asking me wala ka bang sasabihin? Hindi ka ba mag-rereact?Unang-una yung mga nangyari, yung mga na air ni Gab, has made me realize na talagang sineseryoso yata ng mga Pilipino ngayon ang darating na election,” Gary said.

(A lot of people have been asking me, ‘Won’t you say anything? Won’t you react?’ First of all, what happened and what views Gab aired made me realize how people are seriously thinking about the upcoming elections.)

(Because many reacted to it. There are even death threats. But I believe I cannot bash the bashers or hate the haters because they have do have a point, sometimes they have a point with what they’re saying about Gab.)

Yung binanggit ni Paolo, ‘di ba Paolo stood up for his brother, that is a very Pinoy trait, which for me, isang mensahe ko sa sino mang mananalo sa susunod na eleksyon, isipin nyo ang pamilyang Pilipino,” Gary said.

(Gab is also like that. He has a point with what he’s saying. Gab went through a rough time, deep scars from his experiences. But those who bash him, I really understand. But above all, I think if our conscience has been awakened regarding the upcoming elections, this [discussion] should continue. We should think about this very well. What Paolo said when he defended Gab, that is a very Pinoy trait, which for me is my message to whoever wins next year, think about the Filipino family.)

Gary admitted that he was very hurt when it came to a point that he and wife Angeli’s past issues got dragged into the controversy.

“In the beginning na hurt ako kasi kung anu-ano na mga sinasabi even tungkol sa past ko. (I was hurt because things have been said especially about my past.) But the past is past. What’s nice about the past is that there is a much beautiful, much more beautiful present and an even beautiful future tomorrow for people to see,” he said.

Gary also said that if there was one thing that also came out of the issue was that it will make Filipinos wiser in voting for the right leader.

The coming elections are crucial for this country kasi sa dinami-daming mga nangyayari ngayon sa traffic pa lang nagiging major concern ito. I think na if we think about these things kahit anong marinig natin, na sa palagay negative, pangit, ganun, pag tama ang pagiisip at sinasapuso natin ang mga mabubuting bagay, I believe that we will make the right decision in the upcoming election and we will see every candidate for who the candidate really is,” he said.

(The coming elections are crucial for this country, in light of the many recent events, including the traffic situation which has become a major concern. I think, if we think about these things, whatever we hear that is negative, ugly and so on, if we think right and we put it in our hearts the good things around us, I believe we will make the right decision in the upcoming election and we will see every candidate for who the candidate really is.)

Last December 6, Gab posted his thoughts about the controversial mayor on Facebook. Gab said that while Duterte is a good leader, the mayor’s moral values are questionable. (READ: Rodrigo Duterte: Yes, I’m a womanizer)

Gab’s post did not sit well with many of Duterte’s supporters, who attacked him personally online. Gab’s brother Paolo, a concert and video director, came to his defense in a series of tweets.  Rappler.com
