Hollywood honors ‘Star Trek’ actor

LOS ANGELES, U.S.A. – Star Trek actor Walter Koenig on Monday, September 10, became the most recent cast member from the cult sci-fi television series to earn a place on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Koenig, who played Chekov in the TV show, was joined by fellow stars George Takei (Sulu) and Leonard Nimoy (Spock) at the Tinsel Town sidewalk star-unveiling ceremony.

“This is something that you hope and wish for, dream about, but something you never expect to really happen,” Koenig said when it was announced last year that he would receive a star. “It’s a joyous occasion and I am deeply honored.”

The ceremony on the famous stretch of Hollywood Boulevard came two days after the 46th anniversary of the premiere of “Star Trek,” that also became a big-screen hit.

Broadcaster NBC canceled the “Star Trek” TV series after only 3 seasons in 1969 for poor ratings. But the show became a cult hit with re-runs in the 1970s.

Koenig, who earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and initially planned a career as a psychiatrist, also played Chekov in the first 7 “Star Trek” movies. – Agence France-Presse
