MANILA, Philippines – Alicia Vikander took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in The Danish Girl at the 2016 Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday, February 28 (February 29 in Manila).

Vikander beat fellow nominees Jennifer Jason Leigh (“The Hateful Eight”), Rooney Mara (“Carol”), Rachel McAdams (“Spotlight”) and Kate Winslet (“Steve Jobs”).

In her speech, she thanked her acting partner Eddie Redmayne, nominated in the Best Actor category, for “raising her game.”

“This is insane. Wow. Thank you so much to the Academy for this incredible recognition,” she said as she accepted the golden statuette.

Paying tribute to the cast, crew and particularly her leading man Eddie Redmayne, she said: “Eddie, there you are. Thank you for being the best acting partner. I could have never done it without you. You raised my game.”

Vikander made waves on the red carpet in a strapless pale yellow Louis Vuitton gown that had observers on Twitter comparing her to Belle in the Disney classic “Beauty and the Beast.”

Vikander portrays the Danish painter Gerda Wegener opposite Eddie Redmayne’s Einar Wegener, her fellow artist who identifies as a woman: Lili Elbe. As Lili’s wife, Gerda stands by his side as he grapples with his longing to live as a woman.
