Following news that they've broken off their engagement, Lady Gaga says she and Taylor Kinney 'have been taking a break'

MANILA, Philippines – Following reports that they’ve broken off their engagement, Lady Gaga released a statement about her and former fiance Taylor Kinney. (READ: Lady Gaga, Taylor Kinney end engagement – reports)

On Instagram, Gaga explained that she and Taylor have been on a break, but they’ve always believed they were meant to be together: “Taylor and I have always believed we are soulmates. Just like all couples we have ups and downs, and we have been taking a break.”

She continued, “We are both ambitious artists, hoping to work through long-distance and complicated schedules to continue the simple love we have always shared.”

Gaga also asked her followers to support their relationship, saying, “Please root us on. We’re just like everybody else and we really love each other.”

The message was accompanied by a black and white photo of her and Taylor from behind, with their arms around each other’s shoulders.

Taylor and Gaga got engaged in February 2015, but Gaga’s recent Instagram photos from a town in Mexico where she’s volunteering show her without her engagement ring.

Kinney proposed to Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, over a Valentine’s Day dinner last year at a New York restaurant owned by her family.

Gaga met Kinney, now 35, in 2011 when they filmed the video for “You & I” in the open fields of Nebraska – in which she had incidentally worn her mother’s wedding dress.

Despite the hints of romance, the video was full of disturbing imagery including the simulated torture of Gaga.

In 2013, Gaga told talk show host Ellen DeGeneres that Kenney, best known for his role on drama series Chicago Fire, was both her lover and best friend, describing the combination as “the best thing ever.”

One of the most successful pop artists to emerge in the last decade, Gaga has said that she had trouble in the past sustaining relationships as partners were often intimidated by her success or uncomfortable with her openness about sex, including her bisexuality. – With reports from Agence France-Presse/
