Confirmed: Brie Larson to play ‘Captain Marvel’
The 'Captain Marvel' movie is scheduled for release in 2019

MANILA, Philippines – Academy Award winner Brie Larson is stepping into the world of superheroes as she is set to play Captain Marvel.

The news was confirmed during her appearance at Comic-Con in San Diego, USA on Saturday, July 23.

Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, surprisingly brought out Brie for their traditional group photo at the end of the Marvel Hall H panel.

Brie also confirmed the news herself by tweeting: “Call me Captain Marvel.”


According to the Hollywood Reporter, the script will be written by Nicole Perlman of Guardians of the Galaxy and Meg LeFauve of Inside Out fame.

Brie, who appeared in movies such as 21 Jump Street and Trainwreck, was recognized for her role as Joy “Ma” Newsome in the movie Room, which won her an Oscar.

Variety previously reported that she could be tied to the role – even tagged as the frontrunner, albeit with no confirmation. 

Captain Marvel, a.k.a. Carol Danvers, is a “skilled pilot” and good at hand-to-hand combat – according to her profile on Her powers include “flight, enhanced strength, durability and the ability to shoot concussive energy bursts from her hands.”

According to Entertainment Weeklythe character almost appeared in Avengers: Age of Ultronbut there was no actress for the role yet.

Captain Marvel is scheduled for a March 2019 release –
