On Thursday, August 18, Karen’s sister Jocelyn Bordador sent her family’s statement to Rappler. The statement expressed hurt over the criticism Karen has received after the arrest and appealed to those close to the family to support and defend her.

Below is the statement in full:

“We, the Bordador family, are one with the public in condemning the usage and possession of illegal substances.

“But we find it very painful and hurtful to face the harsh words, cursing, and criticism made by insensitive individuals who do not even have a personal connection with Karen and our family.

“Karen has always been a kind-hearted, caring, thoughtful, generous, and loving person. She would be the last person to engage in activities that might bring harm to others.

“For those of you who really know Karen and our family personally, please share how Karen and we, as a family, have engaged in activities for the betterment of the community. Please help us encourage Karen by acknowledging the good things that she has done.

“We beg for your kindness and your good heart in putting an end to the criticisms that have unfairly painted a negative picture of our gracious daughter and caring sister, Karen.

“We pray to God for divine protection, justice and truth during this very trying time. Lahat tayo’y haharap din sa tunay na hustisya na galing sa Panginoon. (We will all face true justice from the Lord.)

“Maraming salamat po. (Thank you very much.)”

Jocelyn posted her own message to Karen’s critics, saying, “My baby sister is a good person with a big heart. Our personalities are like water and oil, but she is just like the rest of us, in some ways even better. She only wants the greater good, starting from the people dearest to her heart and ending with the world.”

She also asked those close to Karen to post stories about her with the hashtag “#‎KARENBORDADORISLOVE” to end the “character assination” against Karen.
