Roach was born in Dedham, Massachusetts and was a professional boxer up until 1987, with a record of 41 wins and 12 losses. After he retired, he became the apprentice of his Hall of Fame trainer Eddie Futch.

The 51-year-old bachelor found his own success as a trainer, having coached more than 20 world champions.

Roach has been inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame and was elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in December. He has been recognized five times as Trainer of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America.
