TV5 wants to solidify its position as the Philippines' 3rd most watched network

MANILA, Philippines – In its bid to gradually overtake its 2 competitors, TV5 launched a dozen new shows on Wednesday, February 15, beefed up by a remake of the classic series Valiente and a program featuring “Megastar” Sharon Cuneta.

A series that ran for around 5 years in the 1990s, Valiente has made a comeback and airs Mondays to Fridays.

The TV production head in charge of Valiente, Rams David, said the remake’s storyline is basically the same as the original, but the production team tweaked some elements to fit the current political and technological settings.

David added, “We are blessed with the 4 big stars of TV5 – Oyo Boy (Sotto), Nadine (Samonte), Niña (Jose), and JC (de Vera) – and it’s supported by (versatile) and award-winning actresses like Jaclyn Jose, Gina Alajar, Mark Gil, and the original Valiente, Michael de Mesa, who flew in from the United States.”

In March, TV5 will also unveil a show featuring Cuneta, a long-time ABS-CBN talent who transferred networks last year, according to a statement.

In the 1st quarter, the Kapatid network also airs 11 other new shows, including the late-night newscast Pilipinas News, anchored by Paolo Bediones, Cheri Mercado, and Jove Francisco; and the documentary show Insider hosted by TV5 broadcasters.

Target audience share

The launch of the new shows is part of TV5’s efforts to solidify its position as the Philippines’ 3rd largest broadcast network in terms of audience share.

TV5’s executive vice president and COO Roberto Barreiro told Rappler that the network targets an audience share of over 20% in 2012 from their current 16%.

This will allow TV5 to gradually catch up with GMA-7 and ABS-CBN, each of which has an audience share of around 30%, Barreiro said.

“It’s really challenging,” said TV5 president and CEO Ray Espinosa in describing how it feels to be #3.

“The entire company, the entire staff are all challenged by having to work very hard to achieve our objectives. We’re all gung-ho about it,” Espinosa said.

Meanwhile, Espinosa said he remains open to a “synergy” between TV5 and GMA-7.

“(If) the synergies between the #1 and the #3 are really very good, production costs and other costs would go down, and quality would improve tremendously for (TV)5. Networks can become even more far-reaching,” he said. – Rappler.com
