Priyanka Chopra tries to break into recording in the US market

WILL SHE MAKE IT? Only time will tell. Screen grab from YouTube (universalmusicindia)

MANILA, Philippines – Miss India and Miss World 2000 Priyanka Chopra is embarking on a recording career in the US, according to LA Times.

Chopra, 30, who has been a Bollywood actress since winning the international beauty title more than a decade ago, is hoping to be the first South Asian crossover talent to break into the US market.

LA Times reports that while most Bollywood actors are known to lip-synch to songs sung by professional singers and used in music and dance sequences in their movies, Chopra is one of the few who actually sing or use her own voice.

This fact encouraged Bollywood music mogul Anjula Acharia-Bath to approach her, making her the first act and only act so far of a new label called Desi Hits! Universal. American Idol mentor and music producer Jimmy Iovine (Lady Gaga, Eminem, Black Eyed Peas) will run the label with Acharia-Bath.

Their goal is to break an Indian pop act in America. If Chopra’s album makes it, she’ll be deemed a “pioneer” in her home country, where she is more popularly known as a beauty queen and an actress, not a recording artist (she has not recorded an album in India).

“In My City” debuted in the US last October. It was the anthem for Thursday Night Kickoff, the “pregame show for NFL Network’s Thursday night football.”

Leading the production of Chopra’s first album is Moroccan-born hitmaker Nadir Khayat aka RedOne, a music producer who is behind some of the hits of Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull, Enrique Iglesias and Nicki Minaj.

Chopra’s album is set for release in early 2013 through Iovine’s Interscope and RedOne’s 2101 Records Imprint. Both are part of Universal Records.

According to LA Times, Gaga’s manager will also be guiding Chopra’s career in the US. She is also the first Bollywood celebrity to be signed by Creative Artists Agency.
