WATCH: Atom Araullo joins GMA 7
(UPDATED) The news reporter and TV personality leaves his home network, ABS-CBN, where he worked for over a decade

MANILA, Philippines  (UPDATED) – Journalist Atom Araullo has caused quite a stir since officially leaving ABS-CBN, which has been his home network for over a decade. Many have speculated that his resignation meant a transfer to ABS-CBN’s rival company, GMA, and now the network has all but confirmed speculations, releasing a video of their newest talent – who happens to look very much like Atom.

The 15-second video follows a man driving to the GMA Network Center, though only the back of his head and a quick flash of his eyes are shown. The network will make the big reveal on September 21 on their evening news show, 24 Oras

In an announcement on 24 Oras on Thursday, September 21, Atom confirmed that he has returned to GMA 7. He started his career as part of the kids’ TV series 5 and Up and previously hosted a segment on 24 Oras called “Atomic Sports.”

Today, Atom will be one of the hosts of I-Witness, joining Kara David, Howie Severino, Jay Taruc, and Sandra Aguinaldo.

“Mahilig akong gumawa ng mga doku. Talagang alam ko naman na ang GMA napakahusay sa pagawa ng mga documentaries,” he said on his new post.

(I love making documentaries. I really know that GMA is excellent when it comes to making documentaries.)

Atom announced that he was going to leave ABS-CBN on September 15. On Instagram, he said: “Working with ABS-CBN for over a decade has been an amazing adventure. However, the time has come to explore emerging opportunities and challenges beyond the organization. Although I am taking a new path, I have nothing but respect and gratitude for the company that helped me become the journalist I am today. To all the hardworking men and women of ABS-CBN, maraming maraming salamat (thank you very much).”

Prior to leaving the company, Atom worked for ABS-CBN for 10 years. He was a news reporter for TV Patrol, Bandila, and the ABS-CBN News Channel, until he resigned in August 2016. Atom continued to work with the network after his resignation from news, reporting as a co-host for the morning show Umagang Kay Ganda.

He has also dabbled in acting, starring in his debut film, Mike de Leon’s Citizen Jake. The film follows a journalist during election period. No release date has been announced yet. – Rappler.com
