MANILA, Philippines – After a long wait, a new season of Game of Thrones is almost upon us – but do we really want it to come now that all signs point to death for most of our beloved characters?
The showrunners’ and George RR Martin’s track record for killing off characters already forebodes a grim outcome for most of our favorites – but if that’s not enough to convince you that Jon Snow and co. will probably die in the final season of the hit show, then perhaps the latest teaser will.
The teaser, titled Aftermath, is the third – and arguably most foreboding – to be released by HBO over the last two days. (WATCH: ‘Game of Thrones’ teasers ‘Survival’ and ‘Together’)
In Aftermath, viewers are taken into the familiar courtyard and halls of Winterfell, now a haunting, people-less ruin after an apparent battle.
The teaser then takes viewers through the rubble, where certain things that belonged to certain characters stand out: Tyrion Lannister’s Hand of the Queen pin, Arya Stark’s sword Needle, Sansa Stark’s feather, Bran Stark’s wheelchair, Jaime Lannister’s golden hand, Daenerys Targaryen’s chain, and Jon Snow’s Valyrian steel sword, Longclaw, its hilt covered in what appears to be blood.
A closer look at the shot of Jon’s sword show’s a figure standing in the background that looks very much like the Night King, the leader of the White Walkers.
After 7 seasons of dirty politics and fighting against each other for rulership of the Seven Kingdoms, Game of Thrones season 8 sees the contenders for the Iron Throne forming shaky alliances to fight an infinitely stronger force: the White Walkers – a powerful legion of ice zombies marching towards Westeros to do R’hllor knows what.
