MANILA, Philippines – Actress Emma Corrin has been cast to play the role of Princess Diana in the Netflix royal drama, The Crown.
The actress, a relative newcomer, posted about her casting on Instagram, saying, “I have been glued to the show and to think I’m now joining this incredibly talented acting family is surreal.”
“Princess Diana was an icon and her effect on the world remains profound and inspiring. To explore her through Peter Morgan’s writing is the most exceptional opportunity and I will strive to do her justice,” she said.
Meanwhile, The Crown executive producer Peter Morgan described Emma as “a brilliant talent who immediately captivated us when she came in for the part of Diana Spencer.”
“As well as having the innocence and beauty of a young Diana, she also has, in abundance, the range and complexity to portray an extraordinary woman who went from anonymous teenager to becoming the most iconic woman of her generation,” he said.
Emma’s acting credits include an appearance on the British detective show Grantchester, and a turn as Miss South Africa in the upcoming film Misbehaviour, a comedy-drama about the 1970 Miss World Competition.
Emma is expected to star alongside award-winning actresses Olivia Colman, who is playing Queen Elizabeth II, and Helena Bonham Carter, who is playing Princess Margaret.
She will first appear in the fourth season of The Crown, which starts filming in late 2019. The upcoming third season of the show is also expected to air later in the year.
The Crown first premiered in November 2016. The series tells the story of Britain’s royal family, starting from Queen Elizabeth’s ascent to the throne in 1952. The first two seasons focused on the early days of the monarch, and covered events including World War II, the Suez Crisis, the Profumo affair, and the birth of Queen Elizabeth’s youngest son, Prince Edward. The show’s original cast featured Claire Foy in the role of Queen Elizabeth, with her performance earning her several awards, including a Golden Globe and an Emmy.
The upcoming season will see the show’s cast replaced with new actors as the story jumps forward in time, further into Elizabeth’s reign. – Rappler.com
