MANILA, Philippines – The first semi-final round on American Idol was not a good night for Filipino-American Adriana Latonio.
On March 5 (March 6 in Manila), she was among the 10 girls to vie for 5 spots in the Top 10. This round is the first time Americans get to vote for contestants to move on to the next round.
The 9th to perform, Adriana sang “Stand Up for Love” by Destiny’s Child.
AI judge Randy Jackson called her performance “very safe and pageantry… a little boring.”
Although Nicki Minaj complemented her on her gown, she added, “I think the song is too big for you” and that it might be better for her to come back next year.
Despite the pressure, Adriana accepted the negative comments with grace, smiling good-naturedly and listening to the judges.
Online critics were also tough on her.
Brittny Pierre of the.drop.fm said her performance was “the one weak link to mess up the groove,” adding later on that her rendition of the Destiny’s Child hit was a “sleeper version.”
Rodney Ho of accessatlanta.com said she “started a bit slow and picked up some speed but as Keith said, it was probably too little, too late.” He gave her performance a grade of B to B+.
Not one of the favorites
Further weakening Adriana’s chances of getting in the Top 10 are extremely well-received performances from the night’s other female performers.
One favorite of the night was Candice Glover who sang John Legend’s “Ordinary People” and received a standing ovation from Jackson and Mariah Carey. Minaj was left speechless as she sucked on a lollipop.
Another favorite was Angie Miller who sang Colton Dixon’s “Never Gone” while playing the piano. Minaj asked, “Can I buy your album? I want to buy your album” while Randy declared, “A star is born.”
Kree Harrison, the judges’ favorite country singer of the bunch, did not disappoint as she belted out Faith Hill’s “Stronger.” Minaj called her voice “my favorite tone of group” and added that she is still “obsessed” with Harrison.
Amber Holcomb gave an impressive rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I Believe in You and Me,” prompting Minaj to ask, “How do you sing so effortlessly?”
Here is Adriana’s reaction after hearing the judges’ comments:
But although the judges’ comments are important, at the end of the day, America decides and they may just pick Adriana.
On March 6 (March 7 in Manila), it’s the boys’ turn compete to get into the Top 10. After Bryant Tadeo’s elimination in the sudden death round, Filipinos can no longer look forward to a male Fil-Am American Idol.
The votes received and names of the Top 10 will be announced on March 7 (March 8 in Manila). – Rappler.com
