Tony Stark strikes back in ‘Iron Man 3’
MANILA, Philippines - What if Tony Stark, the billionaire industrialist behind the mask of Iron Man, suddenly loses everything and must find his way back to being a super hero? What if super human beings exist and challenge Iron Man’s “artificial” super powers?
These are two exciting storylines viewers can expect to explore in the latest installation of Marvel’s “Iron Man” series starring Robert Downey Jr as the brash-but-brilliant Tony Stark and Gwyneth Paltrow as his love interest, Pepper Potts.
In “Iron Man 3,” Stark faces an enemy with unfathomable powers who destroys his personal world. After his life of wealth and privilege falls to pieces, Stark embarks on a harrowing journey to find the culprit using only his instincts and ingenuity. At last, he confronts the secret question that has haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?
Back to basics
“Early on in the development, we talked about this notion of taking Tony Stark back to basics because we wanted to see him just use his brain,” said the film’s executive producer, Louis D’ Esposito.
“You want to see what he can do when the odds are against him and it makes you wonder, ‘How is he going to get out of this one?’”
The film’s plot also uses a storyline found in the “Iron Man” comics called "Extremis" which deals with the biological enhancement of humans.

The "Extremis" plot is a brilliant way to bring Stark’s inner turmoil to the fore, according to director Shane Black
“The thing about the 'Extremis' storyline that always interested me in the comic books was that you had a sense that Tony Stark puts on an iron suit and hides inside it in a way,” said Black.
“With the 'Extremis' people, you always got a sense that they’re burning up from the inside. So one of them could actually say to Tony for instance, ‘You drive a car, I am the car.’”
Follow-up to ‘The Avengers’
Viewers can also anticipate the movie not just as a culmination of the first two “Iron Man” fills but also as a follow-up to Marvel’s “The Avengers.”
In the universe of Marvel films, all events that happen in each film have a direct influence and consequence is future films and franchises. So for Tony Stark, though the encounters he faced in “The Avengers” is behind him, he still has many questions to answer.
For instance, before “The Avengers,” Stark thought he was the only super hero in the world. In “Iron Man 3,” he must deal with the revelation that there are others out there. The events in “The Avengers” also revealed to Stark a portal to another world.
The film also stars Don Cheadle as James “Rhodey” Rhodes, Guy Pearce as Aldrich Killian, Rebecca Hall as Maya Hansen, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, and Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin, a villain from the comics. - With reports by Pia Ranada/Rappler.com
