MANILA, Philippines – On Thursday, March 28 (Manila time), American Idol Season 12’s Top 8 performed songs inspired by a classic AI theme, “Detroit: The Music of Motor City.”

Michael Slezak of was thankful that most of the contestants chose upbeat songs “thereby ending a run that gave us ballads for 17 of the last 19 performances.”

Aside from individual performances, there were group performances as well. But according to, they were more “torture” than “treat.”

Slezak reported that AI judge Nicki Minaj was so disappointed by the group performances of remaining boys Burnell Taylor, Devin Velez and Lazaro Arbos that she demanded they leave the stage at once.
