Robert Redford in ‘Captain America 2’
MANILA, Philippines - After veteran actor Samuel L. Jackson was cast as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury in the recent Marvel movies, another legendary actor has confirmed he will play another member of the fictional law-enforcement agency.
Actor-director Robert Redford told Spinoff Online on April 2 that he will play the new head of S.H.I.E.L.D. in Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”
The 76-year-old Hollywood star (and founder of the Sundance Film Festival) said, “The ‘Captain America’ thing is just a very simple thing. I wanted to do something different. I wanted to do something just to be different. Something bold, different. And that felt like a good thing to do. That was it, nothing more to it than that. Well, it’s bold in terms of expectations, I guess. ”
Redford co-stars with returning cast members Chris Evans (Captain America/Steve Rogers), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier), Toby Jones (Arnim Zola), and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury).
The “Captain America” sequel will also star Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/Falcon), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Emily VanCamp (Sharon Carter), Frank Grillo (Crossbones), and Max Hernandez (Agent Jasper Sitwell).
It is believed that the sequel will follow a similarly named “Captain America” storyline in which Captain America’s best buddy Bucky Barnes didn’t die in the Soviet War as the first movie had implied. Instead, after losing his memory, Bucky is abducted by the Soviets who give him a bionic arm and program him into an assassin called Winter Soldier.
“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” directed by Anthony and Joe Russo will hit theaters on April 4, 2014. - With reports from Pia Ranada/Rappler.com
