MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine franchise of reality singing competition “The Voice” is set to premiere on June 9. The show will air over ABS-CBN Channel 2, also responsible for bringing franchises of “Big Brother” and “Deal or No Deal” to the Filipino audience.

Coaches (who also serve as judges) of “The Voice of the Philippines” who will hone the talents of local singers are Tony Award-winner Lea Salonga, Black Eyed Peas member Apl.De.Ap, rock vocalist Bamboo, and “Pop Princess” Sarah Geronimo.

Bamboo, on being a coach, describes himself a “benevolent dictator.”

“I will listen, [but] if I believe in something, if you can do this song, this arrangement for you to win it, or push yourself, I will push that,” he says in an interview with Push. “That’s what brought me to this point. This wasn’t a journey by myself.”

Apl.De.Ap is looking for stage presence, “catching the audience, engaging the audience,” as he reveals in his teaser video.

“I’m gonna be truthful, I’m gonna give constructive criticism,” he says.

Salonga says tone is a determining factor, and also promises to say it as it is.

“What you’ll get from me as a coach is honesty,” she says in her video.

For Geronimo, emotion is what matters.

Wala naman po akong hinahanap na specific na genre, basta importante, kakaiba yung boses, kahit hindi ko siya nakikita at nararamdaman ko yung emotions niya sa pag-kanta (I’m not looking for a specific genre. What’s important is the uniqueness of the voice. Even if I can’t see them, I feel their emotion when they sing),” she says in her video.

Toni Gonzaga will be hosting the competition, while Robi Domingo (former “Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition” housemate) will serve as the social media correspondent.

The blind auditions were held last April 15 to 18. The show will be officially launched on June 9 through a special primer, but regular screening of episodes will start on June 15.

Finding the voice

The American version of “The Voice” was modeled after “The Voice of Holland,” a widely popular Dutch reality talent show.

Now on its 4th season, America’s “The Voice” features music icons Adam Levine, Shakira, Usher, and Blake Shelton as coaches. NBC breaks down the process of selecting the winner into 3 phases: the blind auditions, the battle phase and the final performances.

Coaches are not allowed to see the contestants in the blind auditions. Their backs are turned away while the contestant sings. It is only when they push the button and turn their seats around that they can see the contestant. If none of the coaches turns around, the contestant is eliminated.

If one coach turns around, the contestant joins his or her team. Should more than one coach turn around, the contestant has to choose a team to join.

Once teams are in place, the battle phase is on. Coaches serve as mentors to the contestants, preparing them to out-sing and outshine contestants from other teams. Coaches will then pick those who advance to the next round.

Surviving contestants from each team will enter the final performance phase where they compete against each other. Audiences then vote for their favorites, leaving only one from each team.

The finale will be judged both by the judges and the pubic via votes. – With reports from Ira Agting/Rappler.com
