A second Deftones concert in Manila seemed inevitable but this time it’s special

ROCK MANILA. The Deftones are on their way back

MANILA, Philippines – The first time they flew here in 2011 was proof of concept enough: Manila is Deftones Country.

The blockbuster turnout practically sealed the inevitability of a return trip by Sacramento-based Chino Moreno, Stephen Carpenter, Frank Delgado, Abe Cunningham, and Quicksand’s Sergio Vega (filling in for bassist Chi Cheng). It’s easy to overlook and underestimate just how much of a dent the Deftones made in the crowded musical landscape of the ’90s with its confusion of genres and sub-genres jockeying for attention; but that alternative metal gumbo they stirred up and minted, at once traditional and prescient, had mileage.

More than the songwriting, a staunch work ethic fortified by determinism is to be the diesel of their longevity. Their strong new album, “Koi No Yokan” produced by collaborator Nick Raskulinecz, has not only been hailed as a return to old glories but is their 7th. It is also their second without their bassist Chi Cheng, whose recent passing freights their forthcoming second Manila gig with melancholia and poignancy but also with a sense of tribute, given how it was his accident a few years ago that became the glue which held the band as it verged on dissolution.

Among “Koi No Yokan’s” top ditties include  “Leathers,” “Tempest,” and “Entombed.”

More than a concert, the May 26 Deftones gig at the World Trade Center will be a celebration. – Rappler.com
