MANILA, Philippines – Brace yourselves, winter is back.

The much awaited 3rd season of the Emmy® and Golden Globe-winning series “Game of Thrones” certainly had fans eager to put an end to the suspenseful wait brought about by season two’s ambiguous conclusion.

Its US season premiere last March 31 set a cable television record of over 4 million viewers, and over 6 million viewers for the episode’s two repeats.

The opening saw a 13% increase in its ratings compared to season two’s premiere, which definitely exceeded expectations, said a report by Entertainment Weekly.

Based on George R.R. Martin’s bestselling fantasy novel, season 3 carried over season 2’s anarchy and pandemonium, with tension between the Kingdoms on the brink of erruption.

Now on its 6th episode in the US and on its 4th episode in Asia, the events continue to escalate as the battle for the Iron Throne continues.

Lady Catelyn Stark

Michelle Fairley, who plays Catelyn Stark, talks about the heavier burden carried by her character in season 3.

In season 2, she was greatly torn between her role as a mother to her children, and her role as a leader of the North.

After rash decisions led to an unpleasant season ending for Lady Stark, the newest season sees her in an equally emotional state.

“At the start of season 3, she’s very much a lonely figure living inside her own mind and she becomes quite reflective. It gives her time to think back on other aspects of her life, in terms of how her actions have caused the destruction of her family,” Fairley shares of her character.

But what fuels her through the ordeal is her fierce dedication to her children.

Fairley relays, “She’s still grieving over Ned but her main goal is to get her children back because that’s what keeps her going. That is her heartbeat.”

Fairley emphasizes Catelyn Stark’s role as a dedicated and protective mother who is tougher than meets the eye.

“As season three progresses, you watch something which is stronger and darker being built as a human being. She’s not your typical mother in that respect,” explains Fairley.

On playing the troubled role, Fairley describes how the challenge lies in properly handling the emotions.

“Although the stuff that I usually do is emotional stuff, it’s often about not allowing the emotion to flow. It’s about holding it back,” she says.

With the success the show has experienced, Fairley only hopes for things to get better.

“It’s your baby, you’re part of that world and you helped create it and you want it to be successful and good,” she concludes. – Rappler.com
