36th Gawad Urian: Nominations

MANILA, Philippines – Gawad Urian takes place on June 18, 6pm, at NBC Tent, The Fort. This distinguished award-giving body in Philippine cinema is now on its 37th year.

Gawad Urian was launched in the mid-1970s by a group of committed cineastes who organized themselves as the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino (MPP). The Urian immediately became an alternative institution upholding the best in Philippine cinema, and it gained renown for this creative mission—a distinction that prevails among today’s generation of film actors.

Eddie Romero, who passed away on May 28, was the first Best Director awardee in 1976, honored by the Manunuri for his tragicomic period masterpiece Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon?, which also won Best Picture that year.

Other filmmakers who have been honored by the Urian include Lino Brocka, Ishmael Bernal, Mike de Leon, Laurice Guillen, Marilou Diaz-Abaya, Mario O’Hara, Peque Gallaga. They and other directors represent the Seventies and Early Eighties, widely considered Philippine cinema’s Second Golden Age after the 1950s.

Thereafter, the Gawad Urian would affirm the melodrama tradition of Philippine cinema and the rise of its independent industry. Among the recent Best Director awardees are Jeffrey Jeturian for Kubrador (the filmmaker, too, behind the current teleserye Be Careful with My Heart) and Brillante Mendoza, who was named Best Director three times from 2008 to 2010.
