BuzzFeed Pinoy Pride list: Lea, Charice, more

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines has 27 reasons to feel proud, according to a BuzzFeed article listing 27 achievers with Pinoy blood.

The list, published on July 1 (July 2 Manila time), includes, among others, Lea Salonga, Charice Pempengco, Bruno Mars and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas.

Perhaps to appeal to the deep sense of family among Filipinos, BuzzFeed used Filipino words expressing family relationships such as pinsan (cousin), tita (aunt), ate (older sister) and kapatid (sibling).

Everyone in the BuzzFeed roster has made their mark in the international scene. Those in the list whose parents are both Filipino are Charice Pempengco, Lea Salonga, musical theater actor Jose Llana, actor and comedian Alec Mapa (“Ugly Betty,” “Desperate Housewives”), author Kevin Nadal and YouTube sensation Christine Gambito.

Those with a parent of foreign descent include Jessica Hagedorn, Monique Lhuillier, Vanessa Hudgens (“High School Musical,” “Sucker Punch”), Allan Pineda (apl.de.ap of the Black Eyed Peas), Manila Luzon, Enrique Iglesias, Flickr cofounder Caterina Fake, Hawaii governor Ben Cayetano, Hailee Steinfeld (“True Grit”), model and Miss Teen USA 1998 Vanessa Minnillo-Lachey, singer Cassie, actor-comedian Rob Schneider, Shannyn Sossamon (“A Knight’s Tale”) and more. – Rappler.com
