MANILA, Philippines- Filipino-Mexican Jessica Sanchez was among the first to move on to Top 7 of American Idol, as viewers voted via phone calls, online and text votes Friday night (Manila time).

Sanchez breezed through the Top 8 eliminations with another Whitney Houston hit “How Will I Know” Thursday night.

Judge Jennifer Lopez praised the “natural performer” in Sanchez and said she was a “perfect combination” of little girl and woman on stage.

Mentor Jimmy Iovine notes that Sanchez picked “How Will I Know”, a song that is not her trademark ballad, to showcase her versatility. American Idol Live blogger Jamshid Mousavinezhad says this about her choice of song, “Even second-best for her though trumps pretty much everyone else on the show.”

Sanchez also got a standing ovation for her duet with fellow Joshua Ledet later in the show. Sanchez and Ledet sang “I Knew You Were Waiting For Me” which was originally sung by Aretha Franklin and George Michael.

The two singers elicited rave reviews from American Idol judges Lopez, Steve Tyler and Randy Jackson. Lopez said this is a “dream pairing” adding “I’m looking at them and thinking…final,” hinting that the two may face each other in the final elimination round.

Jackson was lavish with his praise, “Two of the greatest singers to ever hit this competition. This is one of the greatest performances I have seen on the show.”

Sanchez received standing ovations for her past renditions of Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” and Billy Joel’s “Everybody Has A Dream.” –
