‘Doris’ of ‘Be Careful’ shines in ‘Ekstra’

MANILA, Philippines – If anything was proven by Cinemalaya winner “Ekstra,” it’s that there are truly big actors playing small parts.

Jeffrey Jeturian’s film delves into the lives of bit players and, in the process, allows a rising star in the film’s cast to take center stage.

Tart Castro, better known as Ser Chief’s bubbly servant Doris in the noontime serye, “Be Careful With My Heart,” regards her role as Vilma Santos’ sidekick in “Ekstra” a step further in her acting career.

“I’m sure that a lot of people want to be in my position as Ate Vi’s sidekick. That’s why I’m so proud to be Venus, the ‘BFF’ [best friend forever] of Loida Malabanan [Vilma],” Tart says about her role.

“We didn’t have a hard time shooting the scenes because Ate Vi was so low profile and humble. But I still got nervous because she’s so professional and talented.”

A comedy-bar performer who is still active in that milieu, Tart is grateful for her stint as Ser Chief’s maid.

“I am really grateful to ‘Be Careful’ because it made me better known to many people.

“Our show served as a window that made Direk Jeff see what I could do, which I believe made him decide to include me in Ate Vi’s film.”

Jeturian, an acclaimed director in independent cinema, is also the director of “Be Careful.”

With the show’s popularity, Tart has been getting more offers to do commercials and even to venture into theater.

Besides Tart, Richard Yap who plays Ser Chief in “Be Careful” also has a cameo in “Ekstra.” This was Vilma’s special request to the film’s producers.
